With the weekend upon us, I figured I would throw a college football pick to go along with the NHL Lock of the Night. So far I’m 3-1 with the NHL picks so let’s see if I can keep the momentum going into the weekend.
NHL (record 3-1)
DETROIT RED WINGS vs San Jose Sharks
The Red Wings have played the fewest games in the league so far this season but are 5-2 overall. They started the year off 5-0 but have lost their last two games to the Washington Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Red Wings are still one of the top teams in the west and I look for them to bounce back and avoid losing 3 straight games. The big key for the Wings is having goalie Jimmy Howard back in the lineup. Howard is 4-0-0 with a 1.72 GAA so far this season. He missed the last two games that the Wings lost, so his presence should be a huge boost against the Sharks.
The Sharks got off to a slow start but have been better. However they are in the midst of a cross-country road trip, playing the first game of a back-to-back that takes them to Long Island tomorrow. These two teams are pretty evenly matched but I’m going to go with the home team tonight.
NEBRASKA (-4) vs Michigan St.
This is a tough one. Everyone is on Michigan State’s tip right now because of the big wins against Michigan and Wisconsin the past two weeks. But I am predicting a let-down game for Sparty this week which will only make things more confusing in the Big 10. Both teams have a 6-1 record right now. Michigan State has a tough defense especially against the run. Nebraska has an incredible run game. So something has to give. I just feel everyone is going to take the points with Michigan State which usually means the opposite will happen. Tayler Martinez is a tough QB to figure out but he is capable of putting up huge numbers in the running game. Mix that with the home crowd in Lincoln and this should be a great game. I say the Huskers win by a TD.
